After 11 Years, Lee Kwang Soo Is Leaving ‘Running Man’

God of Variety. Framer Kwang Soo. Kwangvatar. Giraffe. Icon of Betrayal. Asian Prince.

It’s impossible to remember a time without Lee Kwang Soo on ‘Running Man’ – mostly because, ever since the very first episode, the 35-year-old actor has been making us laugh with his ridiculous antics, over-the-top betrayals and addictive personality. He’s the silly, quirky, comedic, funny, greedy, kind, caring, clumsy younger brother that everyone adores.

But, it’s time to say goodbye to the lovable dork on ‘Running Man’. Unfortunately for fans, that end has for Lee Kwang Soo and his over a decade long stint on the wildly popular South Korean variety show. Lee Kwang Soo’s agency, King Kong by Starship revealed today that the ‘Tazza’ actor will be stepping down from his permanent position on the show. Their statement reads (as per Koreaboo):

“Hello, this is KINGKONG by STARSHIP. Actor Lee Kwang Soo will withdraw from SBS’s Running Man, with the May 24 Monday shoot being his last.

Last year, Lee Kwang Soo suffered severe ankle injuries from a car accident. He has been receiving physical therapy since, but he inevitably faced difficulties with maintaining top condition for the shoots. Therefore, immediately following the accident, we have continued to openly communicate with Lee Kwang Soo and the other Running Man members and production team. After a long and thoughtful discussion, Lee Kwang Soo has decided to take some time off and prioritize his recovery.

The decision has not been easy to make, as Lee Kwang Soo remained a part of this close-knit, family-like team for the past 11 years. He, however, knows that he needs this time to focus on healing — so that he can return to the screens in a better state when the time comes.

We greatly appreciate the love and support you’ve sent his way during his time on Running Man. He promises to come back healthier and happier. Thank you.”

Lee Kwang-soo sustained severe ankle injuries when his car was hit by another vehicle back in February last year. The other vehicle was reported to have run a red light, before slamming into the actor’s car. At the time, the award-winning entertainer had to take a break from filming and eventually returned with a cast, with which he continued to persevere through filming for the physically taxing show.

Kwang Soo’s last hoorah on ‘Running Man’ will air  May 24th. However, he will still be acting, with his latest new project being the “Happy New Year” movie, a star-studded film starring Lee Dong Wook, Han Ji Min, Kang Ha Neul, Girls’ Generation’s YoonA, and more.

Here’s to hoping Kwang Soo a speedy recovery and a huge thank you for 11 years of belly-aching laughter.
