Billie Eilish’s Latest Track Is An Anthem For Those Leaving Their Good-For-Nothing Exes Behind

Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell has once again imparted wisdom in the way she knows best: music. Only this time, she’s one-upping her game by directing the visuals for it too.

The 19-year-old’s latest single, “Lost Cause”, sees her singing about moving on from someone she considers – you guessed it – a “lost cause.” This person is someone who lacks emotional maturity, someone who thinks they’re above the law despite not even being able to hold down a job, a self-centred individual who failed to notice her efforts in the relationship. She sings:

“I used to wish you were mine (Mine) / But that was way before I realized / Someone like you would always be so easy to find,”

Talk about that line being a big oofff. Sonically, she carries her signature soulful whisper-growl mix over clean beats. But, rather than the typical melancholy, Eilish’s quiet confidence is evident.

The music video shows a carefree Eilish, who is having the time of her life with her girlfriends. They dance, laugh, push each other around in trolleys and generally have a rollicking good time. And it’s probably the aptest artistic choice of imagery to mirror the meaning behind the lyrics. After all, something a lot of us have been guilty of (myself included) when in a relationship, is forgetting ourselves and the people who make us most feel like ourselves: our friends. The self-directed video reflects the banging time that Eilish is having just letting loose, completely and unapologetically being herself (as we all should be).

“Lost Cause” is the fourth off her upcoming 16-track album, Happier Than Ever. It’s preceded by “Your Power”, “Therefore I Am”, and “my future”. The album, her second after her award-winning debut project, WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?, is set to release on July 30, 2021.

I – for one – am happier than ever to see Billie Eilish happy!
