If you don’t already know who Uncle Roger is…
The character rose to prominence when UK-based Malaysian stand-up comedian Nigel Ng shared his horror at a BBC Food presenters attempt at making egg fried rice. Clad in an orange tee and uncle-y phone belt, Ng’s embodiment of that all-too-familiar Asian uncle at the local kopitiam – with his leg on the chair and exclamations of typical Asian disappointment (“haiya”) – resonated with his Asian audience and, uniquely, was a hit amongst his Western audience too. Since then, the 30-year-old has amassed over 3 million subscribers on Youtube and has been branded “the internets favourite Asian uncle“.
Most recently, on a his trip back to Malaysia to visit family, the ‘Rice To Meet You’ podcast cohost took the opportunity to collaborate with local businesses. In his latest video, Ng (as Uncle Roger) takes on the personable, highly respected Malaysian celebrity chef, television host, actor, restaurateur and entrepreneur Datuk Redzuawan bin Ismail (aka Chef Wan). The 63-year-old ‘Food Ambassador of Malaysia’, known for his larger than life personality and quirky humour, has over 35 years of experience in the culinary world.

The video titled “Uncle Roger ROASTED BY CELEBRITY CHEF” sees Uncle Roger visiting Chef Wan at Cafe Chef Wan, the gorgeous restaurant he describes as being “driven by [his] immense passion and love for gastronomic adventures”. Without exception, the video has mentions of egg fried rice, moments that really should have come with Uncle Roger’s classic “sorry children” line, and his signature brand of sarcasm. However! While it starts off with Uncle Roger roasting Chef Wan (all in good humour, of course!), the dynamics soon shift. From being the one who usually does the roasting to suddenly finding himself being on the receiving end of the heat, Uncle Roger is hilariously flustered by the spunky Chef as he attempts to make lamb kerutup under Chef Wan’s guidance. He’s hit with witty one-liners from Chef Wan like:
“How to cook like that; all don’t know,”
“Your hand must be very fast – just like your mouth,”
“Hurry up, when you’re talking, see, all burning,”
Watch the hilarity that ensues when you bring together two very different personalities in one hot kitchen:
