Remember that song that sounded like the beginning of ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ that was playing everywhere back in 2011?
The man behind the masterpiece is a Belgian-Australian singer-songwriter named Wouter “Wally” De Backer — but you might know him better as Gotye.
Now, after the song took the world by storm, Gotye seemed to have disappeared. And ironically, he, too, became ‘somebody that we used to know.’
But really, where is Gotye now???
“Did he stop making music?” you might wonder. Well, the dude is still producing music. He’s just not using his stage name anymore.
Gotye wrote,
“Deep from the depths of Chinatown…here’s @the_3_basics getting back in shape for tomorrow night @rockwoodmusichall. Still a few spots left. And if you don’t like it, you’ll #getyourmoneyback.”
Gotye has actually been – quite actively and consistently – kicking it with a band called The Basics, whose sound and style are very different from what we’ve heard of Gotye. Other band members include Tim Heath and Kris Shroeder, who Gotye met through his other musical ventures. The group has performed shows in the U.S. and branched out over international waters. If you are keen, you might want to follow Gotye’s Twitter account @Gotye. On Spotify, the band has garnered 53,386 listeners per month.
And that’s not all! Gotye has also created the ‘Ondioline Orchestra’, paying tribute to the late electronic musician Jean-Jacques. He’s been very productive while staying under the radar, so while it may take looking a little harder to find him, he’s not done putting out amazing music!
While it is unclear if he will ever return as a solo artist, he’s definitely having a great time exploring other genres of music! We love you, Gotye; take all the time you need.
