While we flock over to the nearest cinema to see the next new Hollywood blockbuster, let’s not neglect our local movies as well! They need your love too, and they sure deserve it.
Take a look at the top 3 we have chosen for you!
1. Pulang
Might want to get your tissues ready for this one.
Directed by Kabir Bhatia, known for his previous works such as Sepi (2008) and Nur Kasih (2011), his films often carry significant weight and pierce through the soul.
Pulang tells the story of a sailor who went out to sea, leaving the love of his life behind as she awaits his return. This film echoes the feeling of loss and loneliness of the two protagonists and gives us a glimpse of how difficult it was to make ends meet back in the day.
2. KIL
This film directed by Nik Amir Mustapha really gave it all in terms of creativity, suspense, and a plot twist you would never expect.
It tells the story of a young man who suffers from depression, sick and tired of the humdrum of his daily life. Desperate to end his pain, he decides to end it all by hiring a suicide service.
After the transaction is done, he falls in love.
Suddenly, death isn’t the goal anymore. It’s survival.
3. Kami
The teenage angst is heavy with this one.
Kami tells the story of five misfits, each looking for a place they belong to while trying to figure out their future now that they are done with school. Each one of them has demons of their own, and spoiler warning: not all of them make it out alive by the end of this film.
This masterpiece by Effendee Mazlan and Fariza Azlina Isahak successfully resonates with its target audience by highlighting the loneliness and uncertainty of adolescence.
