On March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck northeastern Japan, triggering a deadly tsunami and killing nearly 20,000 people.
It leveled whole towns and rendered millions homeless. Worst of all, the tsunami triggered a nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, which announced a level-7 event – the most dangerous since Chernobyl.
