Background

Standing ovation. Megan Thee Stallion, 25, was the first musical guest on Saturday Night Live, and she used her time on the show to speak up about violence against Black women. When the lights went up on the stage for Megan’s performance of “Savage,” the words “Protect Black Women” showed up behind her.

Her powerful performance also featured quotes from legendary activists like Tamika Mallory and Malcom X. In the middle of the song, we hear Mallory calling out Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron for his handling of the Breonna Taylor shooting: “Daniel Cameron is no different than the sell-out negroes who sold our people into slavery.” We also see the quotes behind Megan.

“We need to protect our Black women and love our Black women,” Megan said following Mallory’s recorded quote. “‘Cause at the end of the day, we need our Black women. We need to protect our Black men and stand up for our Black men, because at the end of the day we’re tired of seeing hashtags about Black men.”

In return, the Kentucky Attorney General hits back at Megan’s comments. Calling the act as ‘’disgusting’’. Appearing on Fox & Friends, Cameron said he agreed with Megan’s call to “protect Black women” but added “the fact that someone would get on national television and make disparaging comments about me because I’m simply trying to do my job is disgusting.” Cameron went on, saying he’s used to receiving backlash because he’s a “Black Republican” who “stands up for truth and justice as opposed to giving into a mob mentality.”
