She may cut her teeth on wedding rings in the movies but Lorde’s got an obsession with a whole different sort of ring on Instagram.

And that is: onion rings, ya’ll! Lorde (born Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor) hasn’t released new music since ‘ Melodrama’ in 2017 and she’s been relatively silent on social media – until now! It has come to our attention that the Instagram account ‘@onionringsworldwide’ has now been updated with not one, not two but FOUR new posts. The account was revealed to have been opened and run by the New Zealand born “Green Light” singer in 2017 and features ‘honest’ ratings of onion rings from different restaurants around the world. And a hard to please critic she seems to be! The average rating onion rings that she’s had has ranged from 1/5 to 4.5/5 – close, but not quite perfect. She announced her return with the punny caption:
“Don’t call it a crumb back,”

In one of her recent posts, she addresses the fact that the last post on her Onion rings account was from over 184 weeks ago in June 2017.
“I’ve got to be honest with you, this reviewer stopped ordering onion rings after her identity was leaked to the press in the great debacle of 2017. I’d get a smile and a wink from waitstaff — it got embarrassing, you know? But it occurred to me that some things are too good to let the internet spoil.”
She is, of course, referring to the fact that she’d recently announced a hiatus from social media. She addressed her choice to remain quiet on platforms like Twitter and Instagram while speaking to Cazzie David for Interview. She mentions how trying to keep up with news and social issues via social media “destroy[ed] the part of [her] brain that can make work”.

The 24-year-old also elaborated on how social media had become almost overwhelming, what with reality already having its fair share of woes:
“Part of what made me peace out on social media, apart from feeling like I was losing my free will, was the massive amounts of stress I was feeling about our planet, about systemic racism, and about police brutality in this country,”
Lorde’s return to Instagram, being from a humourous standpoint, can only make one hope that she is doing better! After all, her need to honestly review onion rings from random places (with, let’s face it, not very flattering pictures) is giving a lot of us the joy we never knew we needed.
Brb, going to order onion rings now.
