Cardi B is no stranger to controversy – from asking fans if she should buy a US$88k bag to accusations she’s stolen her latest song ‘Up’ from other rappers, her name is always popping up in the headlines. And, because she’s Cardi B, her courtship with controversy always has points to be talked about. Case in point: her recent revelation that she thought men should pay more for gifts on Valentines Day. Taking to her Twitter account, the ‘Bodak Yellow’ hitmaker confirmed that, yes, while men do deserve to get gifts on the 14th of February, they should expect gifts that are not as lavish or equal in cost. Using an analogy, she said that if men were to give their girls flowers, women should respond by buying their men grass.

Of course, this brought about an onslaught of backlash. After all, how does this lend to the fight for equality amongst men and women (although that fight is, of course, about bigger social issues like the pay gap, access to equal opportunities, medical care and so much more)? Some Twitter users were quick to call out her statement, while others pointed out that she’s being hypocritical, having spent almost double what her husband Offset has on her birthday gift to him.

For context, for this 29th birthday, Cardi B bought Offset a Lamborghini. The gift reportedly costs up to US$700K. Now, there were users (men and women alike) who agreed with the star and praised her for speaking her truth. The 28-year-old rapper however, saw the tweets questioning her apparent hypocrisy, and clapped back:
“Ok so due to my Vday tweet men came on my twitter roasting me sayin ‘but you bought your man a lambo’ but remember…I got 550K ring on my left hand ,400k ring on my right ,Thousands of dollars In Birkins ,soo much jewelry, a lambo truck and rollsRoyce truck ..so we even in gifts.”

The ‘WAP’ rapper pointed out that her husband has dropped just as much on other gifts, thus evening out their gifting ‘scores’. And because some Twitter users also pointed out that they couldn’t afford such lavish gifts, she went on to change her analogy, bringing up things she thought would be more relatable: Louboutin heels and Ps5.

Hmmmm.. What it seems is that what the ‘Up’ rapper is trying to say is that it’s specifically on Valentine’s day that women should be showered with more lavish gifts than men, otherwise it’s the thought behind the gift that counts? What do ya’ll think? Is she being controversial or is there some truth to what she’s saying? Sound off in the comments and let us know!
