Poverty has always been an alarming issue, with or without the pandemic. The issue has only been amplified after the pandemic as many have lost their jobs or failed to find one during this economical crisis.
Twitter user @dideedayat expressed his concern over this issue with a screenshot of an online group discussion about poverty. However, he showed dissatisfaction with the group topic as it seemed to be saying that being poor is a choice.

The tweet reads, “Who is familiar with this club? Hahahaha the privileged discussing poverty is a choice. There are even those who judge the poor while sending assistance to them. This is what you call a lack of intellect and manners. Try discussing with the poor. Can you?”.
He continues to state his point in the thread.
“Some people weren’t born* with a gold spoon. You assume that every beggar is the same to the point that you’d look at them with disgust. Oh god, just say you don’t want to give (donate), no need to look down on them. You think you can take your wealth with you to the grave?”.

He continues to describe what was discussed in the group, saying the moderators were insensitive and it made him feel disgusted. Netizens agreed with him, supporting his rant.

Even Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim responded to this issue, saying that if the discussion was true, it is absolutely disgusting.
He continued to explain that he has also been questioned why he helps these kinds of people. From those who have orange coloured hair to those who support certain parties so apparently, it’s “what they deserve”.

The MP continued his thread by saying that sometimes people in poverty simply need a push to release themselves from the vicious cycle (poverty).
While we may have different perspectives on certain things, sometimes it is also a wise decision to empathize with others who are having it difficult. We never know what they might be going through.
