
A commotion briefly erupted in the Dewan Rakyat today when an opposition MP suggested that Parliament be shutdown, accusing it of lacking freedom or authority.
Claiming opposition MPs had been denied allocations, Shahidan Kassim (PN-Arau) said this showed Parliament had “failed as an institution”.
“Parliament is supposed to be an independent, world-class legislative institution.
“It has failed, not just by global standards, but by Malaysian standards as well. I call for parliamentary services to be shutdown again,” he said while debating the Supply Bill (Budget) 2026 at the committee stage today.
RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) then interjected and referred to Standing Order 36(4), accusing Shahidan of being rude, and saying he should not have attacked Parliament, as it is an institution given authority by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
