Gypsy Rose Blanchard has revealed that she regrets conspiring with then-boyfriend Nicholas “Nick” Godejohn to murder her mother, just before her early release from prison.
“Nobody will ever hear me say I’m glad she’s dead or I’m proud of what I did. I regret it every single day,” Gypsy says. “… She didn’t deserve that. She was a sick woman and unfortunately I wasn’t educated enough to see that. She deserved to be where I am, sitting in prison doing time for criminal behavior.”
The murder of Dee Dee, Gypsy’s mother, came in 2015 after she is believed to have inflicted years of abuse on Gypsy due to Munchausen by proxy, a rare disorder in which a guardian exaggerates or induces illness in a child for attention and sympathy.
Gypsy was subjected to various painful medical procedures which were unnecessary, such as painful feeding tubes. She was also instructed to use a wheelchair due to having alleged muscular dystrophy, when she could walk unassisted.
This case has been adapted in various forms of media such as The Act, starring Joey King.
