Less than 0.5% of fatal crashes involve drunk drivers, says Loke

Transport minister Loke Siew Fook said his ministry, in collaboration with the home ministry and the police, has continued to strengthen its awareness and advocacy campaigns as well as conduct enforcement operations nationwide.
KUALA LUMPUR:

Fatal accidents caused by road users under the influence of alcohol made up less than 0.5% of all fatal road accidents nationwide between 2022 and June this year, said transport minister Loke Siew Fook.

He said that in 2022, there were 14 fatal road accidents caused by drunk road users, which is 0.23% out of 6,080 cases of all types of accidents recorded that year.

As for the following year, only 13 cases, or 0.2% of 6,473 fatal road accident cases were recorded, while only 12 cases, or 0.19% of 6,464 fatal road accidents were recorded in 2024.

Meanwhile, as of June this year, only two fatal accidents involving drunk road users were recorded, accounting for just 0.06% of the 3,087 fatal accidents of all types.
