The restrictions placed on celebrations of Thaipusam in the coming month are being disputed by human resource minister, Datuk Seri M Saravanan.
The aforementioned restrictions are related to the prohibition of chariot processions which was announced on December 7 by National Unity Minister, Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique due to the risks of COVID-19 especially the new variant, Omnicron.
The chariot processions are an integral part of Thaipusam celebrations.

The validity of these restrictions has been called into question in light of the government’s 100-day Aspirasi Keluarga Malaysia event held on December 9. The event which was attended by thousands took place at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
Even MP of Lembah Pantai, Fahmi Fadzil took to Twitter to point out the disregard for social distancing at the event yesterday.
