But every so often, a beacon of hope arises in the form of a kind-hearted individual who recognises the potential in a child and is prepared to lend a helping hand.
One such pupil, Norasiah Jamil, was fortunate to have a teacher who went above and beyond to make sure she had the chance to advance in her academics.
