Perlis mulls levy on tourists exiting to Thailand

PETALING JAYA:

The Perlis government is studying a proposal to impose charges of RM2 to RM5 on tourists leaving for Thailand through the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) complexes at Padang Besar and Wang Kelian.

Menteri besar Shukri Ramli said the proposal will be thoroughly reviewed before an official application was submitted to the federal government, Bernama reported.

If approved, the levy would provide revenue for the state, which could be used to improve infrastructure in Perlis, among other things, he said.

Meanwhile, state secretary Rahimi Ismail said data must first be collected before an application is sent to Putrajaya.

There are officially eight land border checkpoints between Malaysia and Thailand, with two in Perlis.
