Have you ever been in a toxic, co-dependent relationship? 🙁 Renfield has! Actually, he’s still in one *cue Nicolas Cage as Dracula making an entrance*
While most vampires are depicted as dark and broody, Renfield flips this trope and presents a hilarious and witty Nicolas Cage as Renfield’s (played by Nicolas Hoult) maniacal, narcissistic master. The dynamic between the duo is absolutely bonkers, but in a good way. In the presence of Dracula, Renfield diminishes into his role as a timid servant, so much that he has to join a support group for those stuck in toxic, co-dependent relationships. He even learns new affirmations to repeat to himself!
Say it with me: I am enough. I have enough. I am enough. I have enough. I am…
And of course, just as the poor lad is making progress, Dracula messes everything up for him. But Dracula isn’t Renfield’s only enemy! A crime family is involved, and beat cop Rebecca Quincy (played by Awkwafina) comes into the picture.
This film will definitely send you laughing — or cackling, hehe — with the deadpan jokes, comedic acting and absurd action scenes. This recipe is what sets Renfield apart from the common vampire trope. The tone is reminiscent of Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant. Also, for those who are loving Hoult’s pale, goth look, you might want to check out Warm Bodies! While Cage captivates the audience with his flashy and dramatic Dracula, Hoult holds his own with his overwrought portrayal of Renfield.
And it’s worth to mention that rock band My Chemical Romance, who famously refused to be on the soundtrack of Twilight (another vampire movie) in order to put a gap between their gothic image and vampirism, ends up on the soundtrack of this film, which is, well, also a vampire movie.
Now make sure to catch this film because you’re in for a real treat!
P/S: Stay out of toxic relationships, kids.
