“M3GAN”; She’s More Than Just a Toy. She’s Part of the Family.

today6 January 2023

Blumhouse Productions, also responsible for Insidious and The Conjuring series, has done it again by releasing a fresh twist on sci-fi horror films about a toy that was supposed to be a parent’s ally, except it all goes horribly wrong…

The plot of the movie starts when a robot scientist, Gemma (Allison Williams), ends up being the caregiver to her recently orphaned niece, Cady (Violet McGraw). Gemma juggles between forming a connection with Cady and making her deadlines as a robotic engineer. She then decides to gift M3GAN, a robot prototype, as a ‘friend’ for her grieving niece.

M3GAN is different from other toys because she is a self-developing robot and is able to learn everything herself and keeps improving her robotic limitations. M3GAN also can help with disciplining the children, thus enabling Gemma’s increasing neglect towards Cady.

Hmm it’s like every single parents’ wish came true.

However, after Cady and M3GAN spend wayyyyy too much time together, M3GAN begins identifying as Cady’s primary caregiver, at which point Gemma decides the situation has gotten too far. This, of course, infuriates M3GAN. (Uh-oh! Someone has attachment issues I see). Everything goes awry once the robot friend goes into a rage!

This movie teaches us that it’s okay to be sad and you can take as much time as you need to grieve. Things might even get worse if you try pushing the sadness away by masking your emotions. You can’t be happy all the time. Give sadness some space if you have to. It won’t last forever and soon there will be sunshine waiting for you.

Oh! And there’s a surprise character in this movie too.  For Malaysians that watched Crazy Rich Asians, can you guys guess who this line is from? “Hong Kong Vogue? Your dress is a disaster! If you wore the Bottega gown like I told you, we’d be in the American Vogue!” YES! It’s Ronnie Chieng!

So will M3GAN be as iconic as Chucky or Annabelle, you’ll be the judge of that. Run and get your tickets before she comes and finds you!
