KUALA LUMPUR:

The situation in landslide and flood-affected areas of Sabah is improving with all victims in Beaufort and Sipitang allowed to return home this morning, while conditions in Penampang, Papar and Membakut remain affected.

The Sabah state disaster management committee (JPBN) said the number of evacuees in temporary relief centres has dropped sharply to 1,476 people compared with 2,256 people yesterday evening.

A total of 13 relief centres remain open — six in Membakut housing 738 flood victims, six in Penampang with 493, and one in Papar sheltering 245.

“There are 53 villages still affected as of this morning, compared with 120 yesterday evening, with 24 in Penampang, 20 in Papar and nine in Membakut,” the committee said in a statement today.
