A marvel universe film has grabbed an Oscar yet again! This time It’s none other than the expected winner from Sony and Marvel, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”, has won the Academy Award for animated feature for Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.
During the accepting of the award, Phil Lord admired as to what the representation in the movie meant for many. “When we hear that somebody’s kid was watching the movie and turned to them and said, ‘He looks like me,’ or ‘they speak Spanish like us,’ we feel like we already won.”
With their win at the Oscars, truly capped the entire award season for the film which won the top animated film honour at the Annies, Golden Globes, BAFTA and Producers Guild Awards. It’s one of the biggest awards to date for a title based on Marvel characters, along with “Big Hero 6,” which also won the animated feature trophy in 2015.
“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” is an animated film like no other, considering that fact that the movie took longer than a year to finish, and also the fact that, it’s completely different compared to the regular animations we see today, it takes you back to old school cartoon. Almost comic like! “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” centers on 13-year-old Brooklynite Miles Morales, who becomes one of the many many many Spider-Men. The movie was specifically created to have a unique look that combined computer animation with traditional hand-drawn techniques, hence why we couldn’t keep our eyes off for one second.
And it can only get better from here, Peter Ramsey made history by becoming the first African-American director to win an Oscar in the category. The film had no expectations of a box office success, however with a $90 million budget, their unexpected win ended up grossing nearly $360 million worldwide.
What makes the film stand out from the rest, is that they have managed to create a story line that uncannily able to simultaneously reset and expand all that has come before, creating an inclusive world where pretty much anybody can be the superhero … even you!
“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” had strong contenders, trailing very closely, but the academy and fans can clearly see that the film had more depth and was definitely an out of the box idea. Alongside “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” this other films had great ideation and is for sure worth the watch, “Incredibles 2” and “Ralph Breaks the Internet” along with Wes Anderson’s “Isle of Dogs” and Japanese adventure “Mirai.” Of the 17 Oscars given out since the category was created in 2001, Disney has won a dozen, including “The Incredibles” in 2005 and the last six: “Brave,” “Frozen,” “Big Hero 6,” “Inside Out,” “Zootopia,” and “Coco.”
The 2018 was for sure a year of Marvel, up for eight other Academy Awards this year. Marvel’s “Avengers: Infinity War” is nominated in best visual effects and its “Black Panther” is up for seven Oscars, including Best Picture, production design, original score, original song, sound mixing and sound editing. It won for costume design for Ruth E. Carter and production design for Hannah Beachler, Best Original music score, Best Productiuon Design,woah Marvel is on a role!
“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” truly did deserve this win, as I can say it was a wildly imaginative adventure watching the film. One can truly appreciate the amount of work put into the movie, and inclusivity and diversity screams throughout the film. It’s hands down worth the watch.
