We’ve seen the 2002 Japanese horror film Dark Water and its 2004 American remake, right?
Bryce McGuire’s Night Swim would fit nicely, if you’re up for an ‘evil in the water’ film marathon. Produced by James Wan (director of The Conjuring Universe, Aquaman), the film stars Wyatt Russell, Kerry Condon, Amélie Hoeferle and Gavin Warren as a family unit moving into an old house…with a pool.
Russell plays Ray Waller, a famous baseball player forced into an early retirement due to an illness. He convinces his wife, Eve, that they should settle on the house as he intends to use the pool to help with physical therapy.
And enough said, strange things begin happening in the depth of the water…

Russell (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) convincingly plays a loving dad who mourns the glory of his past, but it is Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin), who holds the film together from start to finish. She stands out as the matriarch who would stop at nothing to protect her family, something that most mothers would relate to.
The film runs for 98 minutes, but it allows for breathing space and with plenty of Chekov’s guns eventually firing, so be sure to pay attention during every scene! Much like 2023’s Skinamarink, there is dread in the desperation to know exactly what it is you’re dealing with.

Pro-tip: Think twice the next time you jump into a pool.
