World champs Tang Jie-Ee Wei clear 1st round at Australia Open
World mixed doubles champions Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei advanced to the second round of the Australia Open badminton championships today.
The world No 4 pair defeated their 36th-ranked compatriots Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien 21-19, 21-9 in a 38-minute match.
They will face Taiwan’s Liu Kuang Heng-Jheng Yu Chieh in the last-16 tomorrow.
In men’s doubles, Macau Open champions Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King beat Australians Landon Kurniawan-Phillip Halim 21-8, 21-11 in just 22 minutes.
They will play against the Malaysian-Korean combination of Goh V Shem-Choi Soi Gyu in the second round.
In men’s singles, Malaysian shuttler Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin defeated compatriot Eogene Ewe 21-15, 21-12 to set up a last-16 clash with the winner of the match between Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie and Japan’s Yushi Tanaka.
