Homo erectus (H. erectus), the first humans to have been able to walk upright, were one of the most successful human species in history.

They first arose in Africa some 1.9 million years ago. Possessing relatively large brains, H. erectus were highly-skilled toolmakers who had ventured beyond the African continent towards Asia, crossing into Java via land bridges about 1.6 million years ago.
