Robin William’s Daughter is Unhappy About the Usage of AI to Recreate Her Father’s Likeness

today3 October 2023

Background

It’s 2023, and the usage of AI is running rampant across the world, inviting many to question the morality involved in creating a barrier for artists who create authentically and look for financial compensation for their craft. And the usage of AI to recreate the likeness of deceased artists is another matter on its own.

The daughter of the late comedian Robin Williams, Zelda Williams, expressed her thoughts regarding this issue on her Instagram story. She wrote,

“I am not an impartial voice in SAG’s fight against AI. I’ve witnessed for YEARS how many people want to train these models to create/recreate actors who cannot consent, like Dad. This isn’t theoretical, it is very very real.

“I’ve already heard AI used to get his ‘voice’ to say whatever people want and while I find it personally disturbing, the ramifications go far beyond my own feelings. Living actors deserve a chance to create characters with their choices, to voice cartoons, to put their HUMAN effort and time into the pursuit of performance.”

May we all uphold our morals regarding the usage of AI in the industry, and appreciate the art and talent made by creatives who deserve credit for their work.
