The highly anticipated annual cultural public flash mob, Keretapi Sarong, has once again hyped up Malaysia Day with its bigger, national-scale sixth installment while complying to Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO), this time known as Hari Sarong 2020—which falls on the 16th of September, every year.
The successor to the annual ‘Sarong Railway’ program held every Malaysia Day celebration for the past three years, was seen to be lively this year successfully at several iconic locations in the capital such as Dataran Merdeka, Sultan Abdul Building Samad, Titiwangsa, River of Life (RoL) near Masjid Jamek, several hotels, as well as several locations across the country.
The program continued to centre around unity—which advocates in sharing culture across the multiracial society, usage of public transport, and carbon emission reduction via the crowd’s participation in donning their sarong in style, while commuting on Kuala Lumpur’s integrated train network.
The co-director of Keretapi Sarong and Locco’s Content Strategist Shamsul Bahrin Zainuzzaman clarified on the encouraging participation by Malaysians despite having to align to the SOPs. “The spirit to celebrate Malaysia Day never dies down among Keretapi Sarong’s loyal supporters. This tough time in fact has brought us together even more, and at the same time provided more opportunities for the event to be more inclusive, especially for the non-Klang Valley residents. Each state has its own uniqueness to be showcased, and we are thrilled to see more participation across the country this time.”
While the signature elements have to be compromised due to COVID-19, Hari Sarong 2020 levels up to another exciting level with few virtual events such as ‘#SarongParade20’ online sketch in partnership with KL Sketch Nation, ‘Sarong Hunt’, ‘Sarong Stories’, and ‘Sarong TikTok Challenge’.
