And I, I want to share the amazing moment a Shah Alam-native made one of the world’s best-selling artists of all time shed tears!

On a recent episode of the singing competition television series, ‘American Idol’ – the one that introduced the world to Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Chris Daughtry, Adam Lambert and more – 25-year-old Cheryl Koh (known professionally as Cheryl K) performed for judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and Katy Perry. Los Angeles based Koh, a Shah Alam native, attended the audition for season 19 with her furbaby (a pup named Jimmy Choo, no less). Koh, speaking to SAYS, named the show as the reason she wanted to pursue a career in singing:

“Knowing how much exposure and a challenge it is coming from Southeast Asia to compete on a platform like this, I knew it would help me grow as a singer and hopefully take me to the next level,”

During her audition, Koh brought out a vinyl record of Ritchie’s 1981 hit ‘Endless Love’. The song, a duet with Diana Ross, received Academy Award and Golden Globe Award nominations for “Best Original Song”, along with five Grammy Award nominations. Speaking directly to Ritchie, Koh shared that it has been a dream of hers to duet the song with Ritchie, who readily agreed.

Despite not advancing to the next round, Koh made a great impression on the judges, who were “wowed” by her “passion and guts”. The ‘Hello’ crooner even went on to mention Koh in a tweet after the show aired.

The 25-year-old is ready to take her experience on Idol and move forward to bigger and better things. She’s already paved the way for herself in having been chosen to cover the Motown classic ‘Money (That’s What I Want)’, the theme song for the highest-grossing romantic comedy of the 2010s, ‘Crazy Rich Asians’. Since then, she’s released the single, ‘Better’. Koh co-wrote the track with producer Juan Ariza,(known for working with Dua Lipa) while it was mixed by Grammy Award-winning Jordan Young (whose collaborations include the Queen, Beyonce Knowles). We’ll be keeping an eye out for more amazing stuff from the talented young artist!
