After the success of The Crown’s fourth season, in which relative newcomer Emma Corrin perfectly embodies the young woman who soon became the Queen of the Peoples Hearts, Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki (‘The Great Gatsby’, ‘Tenet’) will be taking up the role as the older Princess Diana in the final two seasons of The Crown. On top of that, Kristen Stewart will also be bringing the late princess to the big screen in the upcoming movie, ‘Spencer’. And, as if to bring it full circle, we’re about to be treated to ‘Diana: A Musical Story’, but on film!
Set to premiere on Netflix ahead of its Broadway debut on October 1st, the show had only managed to complete a few runs of preview performances before the pandemic took over the stage (and the entire world). They even had plans for the musical to officially open last March! But rejoice, because a live stage recording of “Diana” will be available for streaming two months before preview performances are expected to continue on the first of December at the Longacre Theater.
The musical tells the story of how Diana faced the sudden, blinding spotlight after she was engaged to Prince Charles. The story covers her struggles to fit in with the royal family and being trapped in a loveless marriage. Directed by Christopher Ashley who is also the artistic director of the La Jolla Playhouse, the musical is filmed without an audience and stars the original Broadway cast. Jeanna de Waal takes centre stage as Diana, while Roe Hartrampf plays Prince Charles.

Diana, Princess of Wales, was best known for her charity work. Despite being royalty, she remained humble and her shy, soft-spoken mannerisms captured the hearts of everyone across the world. The public deeply mourned her death from an ill-fated car crash in a Paris tunnel in 1997. New York officials have taken the steps needed to put together a theatre revival that includes plans for a dedicated COVID-19 vaccination site on Broadway. They are even going the extra mile by opening pop-up coronavirus testing by theatres for audience members and employees.
Here’s to patiently counting down the days until we get to watch the filmed version of the musical on our digital screens!
