BTS’s Suga Uses Parents’ Heartbreaking Disapproval As Fuel To Succeed

today21 May 2021

Background

Parents want only the best for their children and their future, but there comes a time where every child needs to be given the chance to explore their dreams and choose their own direction.

For BTS’s Suga, he didn’t have it easy. In the beginning, he had to face the disapproval of his parents and deal with the pressure of succeeding in pursuit of his dreams to make a point. However, Suga doesn’t hold his parents’ lack of support against them.

“My parents didn’t understand rap. They are a generation apart from myself, and they never listened to rap; it wasn’t part of the music that they listened to. So it’s only natural they were against what I was doing,” he said.

He also understood his parents’ concerns regarding his future if he ended up not succeeding in his music career.

“Of course, being a musician is a very unstable profession as well. So I can understand perfectly why my parents were against what I was doing.”

When asked about how his parents’ constant disapproval (which includes tearing up his lyrics) influenced him, Suga explains that it only gave him the motivation to work even harder instead.

“I think that motivated me or helped me work harder because there was something that I now had to prove.”

He added,

“I had to show my parents it was possible. So it drove and motivated me to work even harder.”

The K-pop star has also recently opened up about his depression and his struggles in his lyrics.

“I’m comfortable now and feeling good, but those sorts of negative emotions come and go. So it’s almost like cold weather. It may come back in a cycle over a year, year and a half,” he said.

We would like Suga to know that no matter what happens, we (and the rest of the ARMYs) will always be there for him every step of the way!
