Calling Boys Born After 2000: K-POP Legends PSY & J.Y. Park Want You In Their Next Global Boy Group

today5 November 2020

Background

Calling all teenage boys who dream of becoming an idol, K-POP legends PSY and J.Y. Park are looking to create the next global boy band!

Together with the Korean TV network SBS (Seoul Broadcasting System), the two artists will be working together on a new audition programme named, ‘LOUD’.  Known for their audition shows – like ‘Kpop Star’ – SBS roping in J.Y. Park (founder of one of the big three Korean entertainment companies ‘JYP’) and megastar PSY (who recently established his own entertainment company, ‘P NATION’) means that the show is bound to be a mammoth production.  After all, J.Y. Park is well known for being the mastermind behind many K-pop representative artists like  Rain, Wonder Girls, 2PM, Miss A, Got7,  Twice, Stray Kids, Itzy and more. Meanwhile, PSY became of the most recognised Korean artists worldwide following the release of ‘Gangnam Style’ back in 2012, which saw him being crowned the “King of YouTube” and him signing on with Scooter Braun (who manages Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber, amongst other A-list American artists.

‘LOUD’ is said to be very different from the other slew of audition programmes that currently air in South Korean, a country known for its highly competitive music industry. ‘LOUD’ will focus on auditioning and recruiting trainees that are not currently signed to entertainment companies (which is how most K-pop audition shows get their participants). The show has already begun recruiting applications, having started on November 2nd. Successful applicants will join the show in a bid to debut in a group produced by each K-pop hitmaker – one group by J.Y. Park and one by PSY – under their respective entertainment agencies.

The announcement of the programme followed a short teaser with a thumbnail of both producers that was uploaded onto JYP Entertainment’s YouTube channel with the title, “Boys be Loud”.

While more detailed information can be found on the official website for the show, as of now, both groups are set to debut as the next-generation worldwide boy group in the second half of 2021. A requirement to join the show, however, is that only those born in or after 2000 are eligible to compete. No date has yet been revealed for the show’s premiere, but the successful competitors are set to make their debut in 2021. This is not J.Y. Park nor PSY’s first time on a South Korea talent/audition program, with J.Y. Park being a staple on the ‘K-Pop Star’ and Psy having been a judge on ‘Superstar K’ in 2012.
