Picture this: one day, you’re sitting on your bed, typing out an elaborate romantic scene where your favourite celeb is sweeping out off your feet in a grand, romantic gesture. Now, fast forward a few years, and that same celebrity is saved in your phone as a contact.
Well for chart-topper Olivia Rodrigo, that became her reality. The 17-year-old “High School Musical: The Series” star has been on a whirlwind rise to fame. Despite already being an established actress at such a young age, her single ‘Drivers License’ shot her to the very forefront of all entertainment news. Suddenly, everyone wanted to know more about the Californian talent and in one of her many interviews, she admitted that she was “the hugest One Direction fan when [she] was younger”. So much so that she actually wrote fan fiction about the members of the band!

In her interview with Capital FM, Rodrigo went on to elaborate that – in cementing her place as a “die-hard” fan in middle school – she’d written fan fiction where Harry Styles had asked her to be his bride. With that being said, when former One Direction member Niall Horan reached out to her, Rodrigo was elated. As for what the 27-year-old Irish singer has said to her, Rodrigo shared:
“He’s such an icon, and he said he really loved the song. He was like, ‘This is crazy, if you ever need any advice just let me know’ So yeah, I’ve been chatting with him. “
His support means the world to the ‘Bizaardvark’ actress, not only because of her long-time love for his band but…
“It’s been such a crazy roller-coaster ride and I’m definitely excited to have artist friends that know the ins and outs of the music industry.”

The ‘Slow Hands’ hitmaker isn’t the only famous friend Rodrigo seems to have made. She’s also been endorsed by her idol, Taylor Swift – without whom Rodrigo says she “wouldn’t be half of the woman and a songwriter” she was today without” – who commented:
“I say that’s my baby and I’m really proud,”
Rodrigo has also gushed over the support of Halsey (who sent her a whole cake!) and Lorde.
“…all of these people that I have grown up listening to are saying they’re liking the song. It’s absolutely surreal to me – as I put little bits and pieces of their songwriting into the songs I’ve written.”
As of yet, her debut single has broken multiple records, with one being the Spotify record for “the most single-day streams for a non-holiday song” on the platform. The song also made Rodrigo the “most recently-born artist” to top the Billboard Hot 100, and the first artist born in the 21st-century to debut atop the chart.
