Country Queen, Dolly Parton Donated $1 Million For COVID-19 Vaccine Research

today19 November 2020

Background

On November 16, a second COVID-19 vaccine announced promising results from early trials. Bio-tech company Moderna announced its vaccine is testing as 94.5% effective. That’s good news, and a detail from the Funding and Disclosures section about the results had its own juicy tidbit: Country music legend and camp icon Dolly Parton contributed a cool $1 million toward the vaccine’s research and development.

Back in April Dolly announced her plans to support Vanderbilt University’s research and development of the vaccine sharing on IG that she was donating $1 million to the cause and that she hoped her doing so would encourage others to contribute in kind.

“My longtime friend Dr. Naji Abumrad, who’s been involved in research at Vanderbilt for many years, informed me that they were making some exciting advancements towards that research of the coronavirus for a cure,”she captioned the post. “I am making a donation of $1 million to Vanderbilt towards that research and to encourage people that can afford it to make donations.’’

On Tuesday, the 74-years-old country queen was asked about the trending news on NBC’s Today show and said she was happy to learn her donation was doing some good. “When I donated the money to the Covid fund I just wanted it to do good and evidently, it is!” she wrote on Twitter Tuesday. “Let’s just hope we can find a cure real soon.”

Dolly also founded the Dollywood Foundation in 1988 as an education-focused nonprofit benefiting the children in her home county of Tennessee, offering programs like a free book once a month or a cash incentive upon graduating from high school. The program has since gone international. Argh, what a queen we have to stan!
