4 Celebrities Who Ditched Social Media

today9 March 2021

Background

If you’ve ever contemplated hitting “delete” on your social media accounts, you’re far from alone. There are a plethora of Hollywood stars who have chosen to rid themselves of social media for good—even if it was for one day. Whether they chose to take a break from the toxicity or bid adieu to their platforms forever, these A-list celebrities made a decision many of us dreamed about making.

1. Rihanna

The beauty mogul had her Instagram account disabled due to violating the site’s nudity policy, after she posted a near-nude photo. Six months later, she was back, and better than ever.

2.  Kendall Jenner

Kendall Jenner briefly deleted her Instagram account in November 2016—and with it, her 68 million followers. Speaking about her decision to Ellen DeGeneres, she opened up about how her exodus was short-lived because she wanted a social media detox, saying: “I just wanted to detox. I just wanted a little bit of a break. I’m always on it.”

3. Taylor Swift

In 2017, Taylor Swift chose to delete every social media post in order to start from scratch. The singer’s social media page went completely blank, where it then housed a countdown clock to signify her comeback to social media. Announcing her album ‘Lover’, Swift’s return to Instagram brought with it a new online presence for the singer. She has since shared more of her personal life on the platform, including her political beliefs.

4. Zayn Malik

Zayn Malik decided to ditch his Twitter back in 2012, saying that “the reason I don’t tweet as much as I used to is because I’m sick of all of the useless opinions and hate that I get daily. Goodbye Twitter.” His decision didn’t last long, with the musician reactivating his account just two days later.

5. Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran often spends time away from his social media accounts. Taking a prolonged hiatus in 2015, the musician said he was “taking a break from my phone, emails and all social media for a while.” Since then, Ed Sheeran returned but has not posted on his Instagram since December 2019, posting a message to fans explaining he was “taking a breather to travel, write and read.”
