Wait Wh-? Drake Bell Changed His Name, Moved To Mexico & Is Now A Spanish Pop Star

No, really. In another 2020 plot twist, Drake Bell from Nickelodeon’s ‘Drake and Josh’ is now Drake Campana (which basically means ‘bell’ but in Spanish). The 34-year-old actor actually made the change to his name and content a year ago but fans are only noticing this now, with Bell … err … Campana trending on Twitter.

According to an article by Distractify, Reddit user Privvy_Gaming pointed out that the catalyst for this weird change was Bell’s 2019 performance at Telehit (think ‘MTV Music Awards’ but for a Mexican cable/satellite television network). Apparently, Bell felt that the positive reception that his performance got was an eye-opener for how little effort American artists made to communicate effectively with their Latin American fans. With that said, Bell took to Twitter a little later to state :

“mis redes sociales ahora solo estarán en español, no más inglés (My social networks will now only be in Spanish, no more English),”

And he’s kept true to his word since, posting content with Spanish captions and even including memes that point out his directional change.

The Californian has yet to change his social media handles to ‘Drake Campana’ but that is the name he has chosen to go by on his profiles. But – the change seems to be a legal one, with the ‘The Amanda Show’ star sharing what appears to be a Mexican identification card. The card states that his name is ‘Drake Campana’ alongside his actual birthday and the registration date of May 2019.

And while the identification card could be fake, this Spanish career definitely isn’t. Bell – who has released multiple songs and albums since the mid-2000s (‘Telegraph’ in 2005, ‘It’s Only Time’ in 2006, ‘Ready Steady Go!’ in 2014 and ‘The Lost Album in 2020′) – has gained quite a following since his cover of Juanes’ “La Camisa Negra”. He’s also recently been avidly promoting his Spanglish track, “Fuego Lento”.

Twitter is having a field day since the revelation, with many sharing the same hilarious response – utter confusion.

TL;DR: Why Drake Bell decided to become ‘Drake Campana’ – we may have to wait to hear from the singer himself. Until then, we’ll just have to deal with the shock of the news the same way we’ve dealt with everything that 2020 has already thrown at us…
