Recently unveiled as the ‘most-streamed British artist of 2020’ in the UK, Ed Sheeran is solidifying the position with a surprise for fans. For the first time in 18 months, Sheeran has blessed us with a Christmas present: the track, ‘Afterglow’!

By way of explanation, Sheeran shared:
“Afterglow is a song I wrote last year that I wanted to release for you.”
Following his signature style, the song is a mellow, acoustic ballad – most obviously about his wife of almost a year now, Cherry. The lyrics of the song tell of Sheeran’s desire to how onto their love for as long as is possible or, as he sings, “’till the afterglow”. The first verse goes:
“Stop the clocks, it’s amazing
You should see the way the light dances off your head
A million colours of hazel, golden and red
Saturday morning is fading
The sun’s reflected by the coffee in your hand
My eyes are caught in your gaze all over again.”
Meanwhile, the artwork for the track features what Sheeran has described as a combination of “paints and having a splash around”. Having done the piece himself post-‘Divide’ tour in 2019, the 29-year-old singer shared that it helped him get over the feeling of being “a bit useless”.

Posting a picture of the painting on his Instagram, Sheeran detailed:
“Spent an entire month since tour ended painting, which I’ve never done before. Had so much fun doing it. If I’m honest I felt a bit useless once tour had ended, coz singing, writing and gigging is all I’ve ever known, so it’s nice to find a new way to be creative.”

The father of daughter Lyra Antarctica Seaborn also debunked the idea of a new album in his caption too, stating:
“It’s not the first single from the next album, it’s just a song I love, and hope you love too. Enjoy !”
