Emma Roberts and Garrett Hedlund revealed in August that they were expecting their first child together—and by all accounts, Emma and Garrett have been looking forward to taking this new step in their lives after nearly two years of dating. Right?
However, news of a previously unreported January DUI arrest has us hoping everything’s as sunny as it seems. According to court documents, Garrett has been on probation ever since his February sentencing, completed a 30-day rehabilitation program, and has been regularly attending an addiction counseling program per the requirements of his plea deal.
In other words, Garrett has been taking these major steps toward addressing his addiction issues at the same time as they’ve learned of Emmas’ pregnancy and prepared for their first child’s arrival, an overwhelming time made all the more difficult.
Per Garrett’s representative, the arrest may have been the wake-up call the actor needed—not that that’s how he put it. “When the incident occurred, Garrett immediately sought treatment which was successful,” the rep told Us Weekly. “Today, he is in a solid and great place.”
According to the legal records of the case, Garrett was arrested on two DUI charges (one was ultimately dismissed) after being pulled over and discovered to have a blood alcohol content of .36 percent (four times the legal limit). He was released on a $100,000 bail before his sentencing the following month, and, to our knowledge, Hedlund has faithfully completed the provisions of his plea deal thus far.
But while a dad-to-be being arrested for a DUI is scary, it’s nowhere near as scary as when it happens to a new dad. And we’re incredibly glad that Garrett is getting treatment now.
