Fantastic Beasts’ Star Sentenced To 3 Years In Prison After Being Found Guilty Of “Heinous Crimes”

BBC News has recently reported that 33-year-old Scottish actor Kevin Guthrie has been placed behind bars for sexual assault.

The actor, who played Abernathy in the two Harry Potter prequels – 2016’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and 2018’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald – was found guilty after a four-day trial.

According to reports, the incident occurred back in 2017, when the 29-year-old victim was on her way to meet Guthrie and fellow actor Scott Reid (he played Dr Dan Lewis in ‘Venom’). The BBC news details how, after becoming sick on the way to meeting both actors, a taxi driver phoned them to pick her up. When she arrived, Reid and Guthrie helped her into his home and put her on a bed. At this point, Reid called Scotland’s telehealth urgent care line and left Guthrie in the room “to make sure she was OK.” However, the woman testified that it was then that Guthrie sexually assaulted her. The assault stopped when Reid returned.

Tom Hughes, the sheriff of the court (who acts as a judge) told Guthrie at his sentencing:

“What makes matters worse is that you committed this crime when you were in a position of trust. Your victim was in distress and quite unwell at the relevant time. She believed that her drink had been spiked when she had been elsewhere, earlier that night. The other male in the house was on the phone seeking medical assistance for her. You were left in the room with her, supposedly looking after her when she was not able to look after herself. There you committed this heinous crime.”

As well as being given a three-year sentence, the actor – who appeared in Sunshine on Leith, the Netflix series The English Game as well as Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning Dunkirk – will be indefinitely listed on the sex offenders register. As Abernathy – described as “originally a diligent employee at MACUSA holding a position of minor leadership”, Kevin Guthrie played the role of the American wizard who worked for the Magical Congress of the United States of America. His character oversaw the work of Tina (Katherine Waterston) and Queenie (Alison Sudol) in the Wand Permit Office of the MACUSA, though the Harry Potter fansites go on to report that Abernathy will eventually succumb to the power and influence of Gellert Grindelwald (to be played by ‘Hannibal‘ actor Mads Mikkelsen).
