Sure, it’s been almost two years since Endgame – the name literally alludes to an end – but it’s still too painful to think about moving on. There’s always some glimmer of hope that we’ll see Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man or Chris Evans as Captain America once more (no discredit to Anthony Mackie though, who is doing and will continue to do great with the shield). After all, it’s RDJ’s role as Tony Stark (or, RDJ as himself with a diff. name and a cool suit) that marked the start of over a decade of obsession with the MCU. But with Iron Man gone – for now? – it’s time for someone else to take his place and that person is reportedly Brie Larson aka Captain Marvel.

It is important to stress that this is a rumour, one reported by Giant Freaking Robot. There is a lot of sense to this rumour: a) Captain Marvel is said to be the strongest of the Avengers and even from a comic book standpoint, she tops (if not is part of the top) of the list and b) there’s so much space for her to grow as a character in the MCU. It also works from a social standpoint: we have an independent, strong, resilient, smart woman who may have superhuman abilities but is also suuuuper human with anger issues and her own traumas to work through. She’s also got space in her story arc to be a mentor (like Tony was to Peter) with the inclusion of Ms Marvel.

According to the site, MCU’s head honcho Kevin Feige has promised Brie Larson that she will take up RDJ’s place as the face of the franchise. The promise, they say, is one that’s come up for two reasons: 1) Larson’s emergence as an in-demand actress who has the freedom to drop the MCU whenever and 2) to quell any discontent she may have with the title for the next Captain Marvel movie. The sequel to her 2019 debut as the titular character has been confirmed to be titled, The Marvels, effectively reducing her importance as Captain Marvel. Imagine if the studio were to drop “Thor” from “Love and Thunder” and just leave it at that? Feige has already been playing up Captain Marvel’s importance in the MCU, having said in 2019:
“She’s one of the most popular characters in our comics, she’s one of the most powerful characters in the comics and will be the most powerful character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
And:
“One of the highlights at my career at Marvel was introducing her at Comic-Con and having her coming out on stage and stand there with literally almost every thing else from our universe, and there she was at the forefront, and it was a great foreshadowing of not just for how audiences are going to embrace Brie as this character, but also for how Captain Marvel is about to take the lead and be at the forefront of the entire Cinematic Universe.”

Marvel has already pledged to make more moves towards diversity in Phase 4, bringing in new faces and characters (Iman Vellani as Ms Marvel, Simu Liu as ‘Shang Chi‘ and Oscar Isaac as ‘Moon Knight‘) as well as elevating fan favourites (Danai Gurira will have her own spin-off show as Okoye!). We’re also seeing more female characters taking centre stage with Tatiana Maslany as She-Hulk, Natalie Portman as Mighty Thor and Hailee Steinfeld as Hawkeye.
As Marvel’s face, RDJ was front and centre at press bits and panels. Can we expect this to be Brie Larson’s role now? Maybe – if Marvel can overcome the fact that fans aren’t too keen about Brie Larson herself, that is.
