After previously confirming that the show would continue for two more seasons (onto season six), the plug has been pulled on ‘Kim’s Convenience’.

In gut-wrenching news for fans, Deadline has confirmed that the show’s co-creators, Ins Choi and Kevin White, are “moving on from the show”. The show, starring Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Jean Yoon, Andrea Bang, Simu Liu, Andrew Phung and Nicole Power, is based on Choi’s 2011 play of the same name. White, meanwhile, is credited as a writer for another famous sitcom: Schitt’s Creek. Neither Choi nor White have spoken about what their future projects will be but following their departure, the end of the show will air on April 13th.

Referencing “reasons that [he’s] sure we will get into someday”, Liu took to Instagram to post a long goodbye to the show that warmed the hearts of many across its five-season run after the announcement. Off the bat, Liu was quick to shut down any speculation – most likely related to his increasing exposure and upcoming role in the MCU – with regards to the show’s cancellation, sharing:

“I know what you’re thinking and, to be clear, I was fully expecting to come back for our sixth season. In fact, I was probably more excited than I’ve ever been. I was all in this year. I wanted to be in every episode. I wanted to participate in the writer’s room. I wanted to direct an episode.”

It is obvious that there’s more to the story of why ‘Kim’s Convenience’ has been cancelled, with Liu’s disappointment evident in the line: “entirely separate from my personal opinions on the termination of the show”. After all, the show has received critical acclaim – receiving 40 different award nominations and winning 12 of them – since its debut in 2016. Since finding a place on Netflix, the show has become a fan favourite for its relatability, comedic humour and heartwarming portrayal of the family.

As a result, Liu heartbreakingly shared:

“I feel we deserved better. I feel that you, our most amazing fans, deserved better.”

Nevertheless, the 31-year-old actor wanted for the focus to be on the immense impact that ‘Kim’s Convenience’ has made in terms of representation. Sharing his “immense pride” for the show, Liu shared his hopes that the show “brought everyone a bit closer together during this incredibly divisive time” and that it continues to set the stage for further inclusion in the media.

“If Kim’s Convenience can stand for anything, let it be that amazing things can happen when you open the gates and allow more diverse and authentic stories to be told. I hope that we can all embody the legacy and spirit of this show, and fight to uplift BIPOC creatives and storytellers whenever and wherever we can.”
