Life As A Performer In The Midst Of A Pandemic; Kang Daniel Bares All

today10 May 2021

Background

What started as an alarming discovery has now escalated into a global crisis and is responsible for the deaths of millions worldwide. In order to break the chain and contain the spread of COVID-19, everyone is advised to stay home and refrain from going out anywhere with a large crowd.

For Kang Daniel, who is used to performing before a gigantic audience to cheer him on, the change can feel a little bit jarring. He was quoted as saying,

“I am someone who gains confidence from fans when I perform on stage. I gain confidence from the audience.”

He added that,

“Honestly, my confidence has dropped these days. Now, that self-esteem when I’m on stage is the same feeling as when I’m in rehearsal. Of course I’ll see online reactions but without people watching me directly, what’s the meaning? I’m not just a vocalist, I’m a performance-based singer. As a singer I want to show the stage and visual aspects, as well as the sound aspects, in harmony. But [nowadays] when I show it, it’s a different feeling.”

Previously, when asked about how he’s been spending time indoors while the threat of coronavirus lurks around outside, Kang Daniel says that he doesn’t seem to find it to be difficult.

“I’m such a homebody that not much has changed,” he confided.

He also said,

“If I was really told to just stay at home, I think I could do so for five years. A long time ago, I had heard that they were doing an experiment to see how long someone could stay in a one-room apartment if they just had a computer and could eat what they wanted, and I thought about applying. When the pandemic ends, I want to go skydiving. Right when I was gaining interest in trying it, the pandemic happened and I couldn’t do it.”

Different people react differently to being cooped up within four walls — some experience a spiralling decline in mental health, stemming from loneliness and depression, but we’re glad to know that Kang Daniel is taking it in stride!
