One thing I learned from being a part of ‘’fan base’’: it’s not obsession, it’s dedication. Whew—K-pop related tweets remained in full force last year, reaching a new record of 6.7 billion, as reported by Twitter Inc. on Thursday, 3th January 2021.

The social media company highlighted that Indonesia ranked as the top market (aka the first in the list) to tweet about K-pop by volume, followed by Thailand and South Korea in third place. In terms of unique users tweeting about K-pop, Japan topped the list, followed by the United States and Indonesia.

According to Twitter, the BLM movement contributed a lot to the impressive numbers, “The #KpopTwitter community’s involvement in the #BlackLivesMatter movement gave fans another way to stay connected and express their views on broader issues in society,” said the blue bird app in a blog statement. Last June, BTS expressed support for the movement on Twitter, and the tweet has since been retweeted nearly a million times. Impressive.
우리는 인종차별에 반대합니다.
우리는 폭력에 반대합니다.
나, 당신, 우리 모두는 존중받을 권리가 있습니다. 함께 하겠습니다.We stand against racial discrimination.
We condemn violence.
You, I and we all have the right to be respected. We will stand together.#BlackLivesMatter— 방탄소년단 (@BTS_twt) June 4, 2020
And due to the matter, BTS became the most mentioned K-pop artist last year, while NCT, EXO and Blackpink were next on the list. It is truly not a surprise since their songs grabbed six spots on the list of 10 most-mentioned K-pop songs, with Dynamite, ON, Black Swan and Life Goes On playing on repeat on every radio station across the globe.
Anyway, Malaysian fans… keep tweeting!
