today29 September 2020

Background

Our very own Johor-born actress, Yeo Yann Yann has just been nominated for an International Emmy Award! A little different from the Emmys, the International Emmy Awards recognises TV programmes made and broadcasted outside the US.

Yeo has been nominated for the title of ‘Best Performance by Actress’ in the prestigious award show for her role in the HBO Asia original, “Invisible Stories”. The six-part series was created by another talented Malaysian, Ler Jiyuan, and shot in its entirety in Singapore. In the series, Yeo plays the part of a single mother (named Lian) who is spending her days tending to her 19-year-old autistic son, whose behaviour has only gotten more erratic and aggressive after the death of his grandmother who was helping Lian with his care.

The 43-year-old announced the news on her personal Instagram account alongside the caption, “What exciting news!”. However, the nomination came as a shock as the announcement caught her by surprise. Speaking to Berita Harian, Yeo shared that she had found out about the nomination via the media before hearing from HBO Asia.

“My hands were shaking while taking calls from the media a few days ago […] In fact, I am still shocked by the nomination. I know that the path towards winning is not easy, let alone seeing the list of nominees. One of them includes Glenda Jackson, who has won various awards including two Oscars.”

The mother of one is quick to remind the media that the win isn’t hers alone.

“I wouldn’t have been able to do it as a monologue, done all alone. So, this is not my success alone. On the contrary, everyone involved in this drama should be appreciated. Without their hard work, my name wouldn’t have been nominated.”

This will not be the first accolade under her belt. Since making her acting debut in 1997, Yeo has picked up multiple awards including ‘Best Actress (‘The Iron Lady’) and ‘Best Supporting Actress’ (‘Time FM’) at the 2010 and 2012 Golden Awards Respectively. She also holds the award title for ‘Best Leading Actress’ for her role in ‘Wet Season’ from the 56th Golden Horse Awards last year. As for whether or not she will soon be able to add ‘Emmy winner’ to her repertoire, we will only know on the 23rd of November. Winners will be announced via a ceremony held in New Tork. Until then, we’re rooting for Yeo!
