Recently, Hollywood’s highest-paid actor Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson talked about running for President of the United States. The 48-year-old ‘Fast & Furious’ star told USA Today:
“I would consider a presidential run in the future if that’s what the people wanted. Truly I mean that, and I’m not flippant in any way with my answer.”
Now, it seems like another Hollywood favourite could be joining the fray. Who? Well, none other than the ‘Fresh Prince’ himself, Willard Carroll Smith Jr.

In an interview with the Pod Save America podcast, the 52-year-old ‘Aladdin’ actor addressed his desire to join politics.
“I think for now I’ll let that [US presidential] office get cleaned up a little bit, and then I’ll consider that at some point down the line,”
With the recent change in head from Donald Trump to Joe Biden, that may be a wise choice. However, Smith is hopeful that – as he continues to advocate for what he believes in – he may add politics to his already impressive repertoire of being an actor, rapper, and film producer.
“I don’t know, it’s like, I absolutely have an opinion. I’m optimistic. I’m hopeful. I believe in understanding between people and I believe in the possibility of harmony. So, I will certainly do my part, whether it remains artistic or at some point ventures into the political arena.”
This isn’t the first time that the idea of Will Smith as the President has been brought up. From as far back as 1999, Smith has joked about becoming president (telling Bill and Hillary Clinton to “keep my room warm” after they invited him to sleep in the Lincoln bedroom). At the time, he’d told the NY Daily News (per Variety):
“That might sound foolish to some but, in my mind, if Ronald Reagan can become President, then why not Will Smith?”

Smith is already doing his part in ensuring that Americans remain aware of their history, as he now hosts (and produces) ‘Amend: The Fight for America’, the new Netflix documentary series that explores the history and meaning of the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The six-part series focuses on the right to citizenship granted to “all persons born or naturalized in the United States (including formerly enslaved people)” and the guaranteed “equal protection under the laws” to all citizens. Smith said of the documentary:
“Our hope with this series is to illuminate the beauty that is the promise of America and to share a message of connection and shared humanity so that we will be able to better understand and celebrate our different experiences as Americans and promote progress toward the true equality promised to all persons under the 14th Amendment.”
