If anything, the pandemic in 2020 saw many stuck in one place for long periods of time. Often, that place wasn’t home or wasn’t anywhere near family or loved ones. And this takes a significant toll on one’s mental and emotional health. After all, the comfort and familiarity of home, as well as the love of family and friends, is what keeps us grounded when things seem uncertain, unpredictable and when times get tough.
For James Corden, the English actor, comedian, singer, writer, producer, and television host who is based in the US, the pandemic only served to widen the gap between himself and his loved ones who are still in the UK. With that being said, the issue of whether or not he will continue on with the wildly popular, award-winning show that he’s presently hosting, “The Late Late Show”.

At present, it seems highly likely that he will not continue once his contract ends with CBS in August 2023. Corden chalks it up to being homesick, with the pandemic highlighting the importance of family and fragility of life, sharing (as quoted from The Sun):
“I have a couple of years to go on this contract. Ending the show will always be a bigger family decision than a professional one. It will be about people at home who we miss very, very much, who we are homesick for. I also feel like my wife and I have three young children, and they are three young grandchildren that we’ve taken away from people.”
Currently living in L.A., the 42-year-old (while being an acclaimed actor and comedian in the UK) became a household name globally after he took over “The Late Late Show” from Scottish-American star Craig Ferguson in 2014. The iconic CBS programme first aired in 1995 but the choice to have Corden tabling the show has proven to be an immensely popular one. Since he’s started on it, the show has gone on to be nominated for 17 different awards and winning 4 of them – including the Creative Arts Emmy Awards for Outstanding Variety Special and Outstanding Interactive Program in 2016 and the Critics’ Choice Television Awards for Best Talk Show in 2016.

Without Corden, it can be said that we would never have been introduced to some now-iconic segments like “Carpool Karaoke”, “Crosswalk the Musical”, “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts”, “Honest Headlines”, “Drop the Mic” and more. However, Corden has always been adamant that the US was not his last stop. Corden, who has three children – a nine-year-old son Max and two girls Carey, 6, and Charlotte, 3 – with his wife Julia, will eventually return to the UK. Corden has been quoted as saying,
“I’m almost certain that we won’t live here forever. We’re a long way from home, my wife and I, and our children, and there are people at home that we miss deeply and we care about and they’re getting older.”
While we’ve got to steel our hearts in preparation to say goodbye, we’ve still got three years of Corden on the show, so let’s continue to enjoy his hosting until then!
