We can’t wait for his blinding lights! Our beloved Abel is just days away from his Super Bowl halftime performance, and apparently he spent serious money making sure it’s perfect. And by that we mean he spent $7 million. Okay who needs a sponsor when you are *that* rich, right?

Speaking to Billboard, The Weeknd said, “We’ve been really focusing on dialing in on the fans at home and making performances a cinematic experience, and we want to do that with the Super Bowl.” Though, his manager Wassim “Sal” Slaiby said The Weeknd dropped $7 million of his own money to “make this halftime show be what he envisioned”—though he also confirmed the organizers are covering the usual production costs.

In case you’re confused about how halftime production costs even work (same), here’s the deal: the Super Bowl is unusual in that it *doesn’t* pay its artists to perform. To quote an NFL spokesperson who chatted with Forbes: “We do not pay the artists. We cover expenses and production costs.”

WHY, you ask? Because apparently the Super Bowl is such a massive platform that artists make millions in post-show streams. Last year, Spotify said Jennifer Lopez’s streams soared by 335 percent afterwards.

Production costs covered by organizers can reportedly run up to $10 million, so it’s pretty huge that The Weeknd threw down an extra $7 million of his own money to make the show even more cinematic! OKAY now, we can’t wait to see what that $7 million has in store for.
