Robert Downey Jr. Has Been Nominated For The “Worst Actor” Award For *This* Movie

today16 March 2021

If you haven’t already heard of the Razzies – full name: ‘The 41st Golden Raspberry Awards’ – it’s an awards ceremony that celebrates calls out the under-performing movies of the year. It was set up by UCLA film graduates and film industry veterans John J. B. Wilson and Mo Murphy, every year, awards that resemble a golf ball-sized raspberry atop a mangled Super 8mm film reel spray-painted gold (worth a whopping $4.97/RM20.45) are handed out to the worst of the movie industry. As it has done for the past four decades – yes, they’ve been around for THAT long –, the Razzers are continuing on their quest to “call out the worst”, dubbing themselves “an organisation whose name is synonymous with bad” just “as 2020 fades into a nightmarish memory.” Since its inception in 1981, Sylvester Stallone holds the most Razzies awards for an actor with 10 awards won while Madonna is the most awarded actress with 9 awards. However, this year’s nominee for ‘Worst Actor’ caused a bit of a flurry as it included a beloved household favourite – none other than ‘Iron Man’ himself, Robert Downey Jr. However, the 55-year-old was not nominated for the hero whose suit he’s since hung up, but rather for…

His role in the 2020 American fantasy adventure film, ‘Dolittle’. The Razzies dubbed the film:

“The last Big Budget Bomb theatrically released before The Covid Lockdown,”

And for a reason too. Despite being the seventh highest-grossing film of 2020 it was also one of the biggest box office bombs in history, costing Universal as much as $50-100 million. After all, the stellar cast (consisting of Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen, Emma Thompson, Rami Malek, John Cena, Kumail Nanjiani, Octavia Spencer, Tom Holland, Craig Robinson, Ralph Fiennes, Selena Gomez and Marion Cotillard) on top of the amount of CGI needed, couldn’t have come cheap.

Sharing the, err… honour, with the ‘Sherlock’ actor this year is Michele Morrone (‘365 Days’),  Adam Sandler (‘Hubie Halloween’), David Spade (‘The Wrong Missy’) and Mike Lindell (‘Absolute Proof’). Rather ironically, RDJ has just been awarded ‘Favorite Movie Actor’ at the Kids Choice Awards.

While RDJ was present to accept his accolade at the Kids Choice Awards, it is unlikely that he will make it to the Razzies. After all, only a handful of actors and actresses have actually accepted their “awards”. In 2005, Halle Berry accepted her award for ‘Worst Actress’ for her role in ‘Catwoman’ in person, as did Sandra Bullock when she won for ‘All About Steve’ in 2010.

Unfortunately for ‘Dolittle’, it’s up for ‘Worst Picture’, ‘Worst Screen Combo’ (for “Robert Downey Jr. and his utterly unconvincing “Welsh” accent,” LOL), ‘Worst Screenplay’ and ‘Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off or Sequel’. Also included in this year’s nominees is the Polish film ‘365 DNI’ or ‘365 Days’, tieing with ‘Dolittle’ with 6 nominations. Trailing behind is ‘Fantasy Island’ with 5, and also included in the list are movies like ‘Wonder Woman 1984’, ‘Hubie Halloween’, ‘Absolute Proof’ and Sia’s ‘Music’. As per tradition, “winners” will be announced on the eve of the Oscars, April 24th.
