Background

We often hear stories of celebrities surprising their fans with visits, tickets to see their shows and the like but with the coronavirus pandemic affecting any and all sorts of personal interaction, this is not possible. However, this hasn’t stopped one of the most beloved Canadian actors – Ryan Rodney Reynolds – from doing his part in lighting up the day of one of his own fans.

11-year-old Brody Dery, who was diagnosed with stage 3B Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2020, is the latest to receive a message from his hero, ‘Deadpool’ actor Ryan Reynolds. After utilising the power of social media, the 44-year-old actor caught wind of the brave young mans battle (which also includes Crohn’s Disease, a type of inflammatory bowel disease). Without delay, the actor shared a sweet message of support, shared on Twitter by a Canadian TV station news anchor:

In the almost minute-long video, Reynolds’ cheered on Dery in his fight, remembering to remind him that he had a legion of supporters.

“I just heard a little bit about your story and I just wanted to send you this video and let you know that I’m thinking about you, that I’m sending you tons of love and I’m sending you strength – whatever strength I’ve got. And just, man, you have a ton of people in your life that love you so much, and I know you’ve been going through it. I know it’s been a challenge lately, but you know something Brody? You’re just the man for the job. So I’m sending you lots of love. I hope I get to meet you in person one of these days, and hang in there.”

Since being diagnosed with Crohn’s disease at the age of 9, Brody has been in and out of hospitals but through it all, his mum has described him as nothing short of “a warrior”. Here’s to hoping Reynolds’ message gives Brody that ‘lil extra strength!
