The talk of the town – the diamond of the first water – in the land of streaming and TV is definitely: Bridgerton.
The scandalous, steamy love-story set in the 19th century has taken over screens all over the world, becoming the biggest show on Netflix and the most-watched new series in the history of the site. With that being said, it’s no surprise that the cast of the show has been making their rounds on all sorts of platforms. From magazine covers to interviews, the cast has happily graced us with tidbits about possible off-screen romances, tidbits about the second season (yes, it’s happening!) as well as funny behind-the-scenes anecdotes. Amongst these is one most recently shared by Nicola Coughlan, who portrays Penelope Featherington on the series who recently shared a rather… bloody… story while appearing on The Kelly Clarkson Show.

The Irish actress – who portrays Penelope Featherington – is relatively tiny (she’s only 155cm!) and with how tall the men in the cast are (‘Hastings’ and ‘Colin Bridgerton are around 183cm), it’s no surprise that she was asked to put on heels while filming the Regency-era series. The costar she’s most often seen with due to their characters close-knit friendship, Claudia Jessie tall, coming up to 11cm taller than Coughlan.
“So they said to me, ‘You’re very tiny. Let’s put you in heels.’ And I thought yeah, I will do anything you want me to do. Yes,”
However…
“It became evident pretty quickly that with the corset and the heels, my balance was not so amazing.”
Which then led to the accident that Coughlan will probably never live down…
“So I was walking along and I fell three times and the third time I was holding a parasol which in the wrong hand is a deadly weapon. I fell forward and stabbed Claudia Jessie, who plays Eloise Bridgerton, in the hand and she just started bleeding,”

Thankfully, despite the accident, Coughlan confirmed that Jessie was rather forgiving.
“But she’s still my friend! But unfortunately, there was a stabbing on the first day and I was guilty. It was not good.”
Which works out just as well! After all, in the popular books that the series is based on (by author Julia Quinn), Coughlan’s character and Jessie’s characters are close friends and their relationship grows closer as the books progress (if you know, you know).
