This ‘Bridgerton’ Character Is Getting Their Very Own ‘Origin Story’!

Background

Dear readers, here’s one you probably didn’t see coming!

So, the hit Netflix series ‘Bridgerton’ is based on the romance novels by Julia Quinn. The first season of the show follows the storyline and the characters of ‘The Duke & I’ while setting for ‘The Viscount Who Loves Me’ in Season 2.

It’s also been confirmed that the ‘Bridgerton’ series will also continue on to season 3 and 4 (here’s what we think they’ll follow!). Now, we’ve received word that a spin-off based on Queen Charlotte is in the works. The spin-off will be a limited series prequel centred around a younger Queen Charlotte and will be written by Shonda Rhimes. The formidable character of ‘Queen Charlotte’ is a new one, not one from the books by Julia Quinn and as such, is not constricted in its retelling of the rise and love life of a young Queen Charlotte. Netflix’s head of global TV Bela Bajaria says of the venture:

“Many viewers had never known the story of Queen Charlotte before Bridgerton brought her to the world, and I’m thrilled this new series will further expand her story and the world of Bridgerton. Shonda and her team are thoughtfully building out the Bridgerton universe so they can keep delivering for the fans with the same quality and style they love. And by planning and prepping all the upcoming seasons now, we also hope to keep up a pace that will keep even the most insatiable viewers totally fulfilled.”

Also to make appearances – in their younger form – are Lady Violet Bridgerton and Lady Danbury.

The gossip-loving Queen was based off a real monarch of the Regency Era from 1761 to 1818 – fitting for the series, which takes place in 1813. Queen Charlotte was born Sophia Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz to a German duke and princess on May 19, 1744. She became queen of Britain and Ireland after marrying King George III – nicknamed The Mad King for the manic episodes he experienced – in London in September 1761.  A BBC report in 2013 detailed how doctors found many of the king’s symptoms mimicked someone “experiencing the manic phase of psychiatric illnesses such as bipolar disorder.” While kids are only mentioned briefly in the series, the real Queen Charlotte had 15 children, with 13 surviving until adulthood. Amongst them is a daughter named Amelia, whose death is credited with contributing to the decline in her father’s health. In the series, we’re shown a glimpse of Queen Charlotte and her management of her husband’s mental illness. Amelia is mentioned when the Queen goes to see her husband.

With the confirmation fresh off the press, a release date has yet to be set but, we’re waiting with our quills aquiver.
