Malaysian social media users are having a field day, after news that Malaysian actress, television presenter, and entrepreneur Noor Neelofa Mohd Noor – better known as Neelofa – has released a slipper collaboration with a local footwear brand. However, rather than the hype being around the collaboration itself, people have noticed a few rather …err… questionable details about the product. A screenshot of Neelofa’s Instagram story from the launch of the product shows the slippers being described as “Muslim Friendly”.
The “exclusive” slippers were immediately called out for its choice of branding, with many accusing Neelofa of capitalising on religion to sell the product.
Now, not only is the product description raising ire, the price of the slippers are too. The footwear brand is known to sell affordable items, with slippers going for as low as RM17.90. However, the slippers released in collaboration with TheNoor – the Muslim lifestyle app launched by the 32-year-old – retail for RM79.90. This led some Twitter users to wonder if wearing cheaper, brandless slippers would mean they’d be taking steps away from heaven :

Malaysia’s own “Godfather of Stand-Up Comedy” wittily remarked:
“Any friend of my feet is a friend of mine. Now I know why I have never been comfortable with my selipar Jepun … they just weren’t friendly enough to me. Am looking forward to the release of friendly neck-ties and watch-bands for Muslims.”
Neelofa has been making recent headlines after news spread that she had made a trip to Pulau Langkawi following her highly publicised wedding. As interstate travel is strictly prohibited, many felt that Neelofa was being given special treatment. However, in an Instastory, Neelofa dispelled rumours and explained that the Langkawi trip with her husband was purely a business matter, which is allowed based on the latest Covid-19 SOP guideline.
