‘What’s the point?’, Selena Gomez Contemplates Quitting Music

today10 March 2021

Background

Selena Gomez first made her debut on TV at the age of 10, when she appeared as one of the kids alongside ‘Barney & Friends’ way back in 2002. From then on, the talented 28-year-old went on to appear on multiple different acting projects, ‘Another Cinderella Story (2008)’, ‘Princess Protection Program (2009)’, ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ and much, much more. However, her Disney roots may be more of a bane than a boon, with Gomez admitting that she still lives “with this haunting feeling that people still view me as this Disney girl,”. And what exactly does this entail? Well…

“That was my job in a way—to be perfect. You’re considered a figure kids look up to, and they [Disney] take that seriously there.”

That’s not all that Gomez went into detail on as Vouge‘s April cover star, she also brought up the fact that she may actually be done with making music.

Despite being named after the iconic Selena Quintanilla, Gomez unfortunately, still feels like she hasn’t made as much of an impact as her namesake in the music industry

“It’s hard to keep doing music when people don’t necessarily take you seriously. I’ve had moments where I’ve been like, ‘What’s the point? Why do I keep doing this?’ ‘Lose You to Love Me’ I felt was the best song I’ve ever released, and for some people it still wasn’t enough.”

Indeed it was, with ‘Lose You to Love Me’ topping the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Gomez’s first number-one song on the chart. However, many were more focused on the ‘who’ behind the song (i.e. if it was about her famous ex) than on the importance of the song to Gomez herself as an individual. The song, to Gomez, was the result of a turning point in her life – one that saw her put down her phone, distance herself from the toxicity and obsession with social media and take the time to truly capture her heartbreak in a song.

“Once I stopped, and accepted my vulnerability, and decided to share my story with people—that’s when I felt release,”

Gomez does recognise the songs commercial success, nothing that the love that poured in is a sign that yes, her music does matter.

“For that I’m so thankful, for that I keep going, but I think the next time I do an album it’ll be different. I want to give it one last try before I maybe retire music.”

Does this mean Gomez will be backing away from the entertainment industry as a whole? Not really, as she intends to focus on producing (like what she did with Netflix’s ’13 Reasons Why’) and return to her acting roots. Whatever Gomez decides to do, we can only hope it aligns with her dreams and continues to feed her soul in the best ways possible!
